Reviving Old Ottomans: A Reupholstery Project with Calico

Today, I’m so excited to share our ottoman transformation journey with you, thanks to the amazing team at Calico! Reupholstering furniture can initially seem daunting and costly, so having experts on board makes all the difference. One of the things I love most about reupholstering furniture is bringing new life to older, high-quality pieces. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about taking something and turning it into a thing of beauty—it’s easily one of my favorite things to do!

Beyond the aesthetic aspect, reupholstering is also a more sustainable and eco-friendly option. By giving old furniture a makeover, we’re not just keeping items out of landfills; but also creating unique pieces that add character to our home. Plus, it’s an investment in longevity. You’re creating pieces to enjoy for years to come, and many even family heirlooms one day.

I stumbled upon a fantastic deal on Facebook Marketplace just before Christmas (I found BOTH of these ottomans for $80!). Although they were in great condition, their colors didn’t quite mesh with our decor. I saw their potential and knew a fabric change would make these absolutely perfect for our home.

Ottomans, in general, are one of my favorite furniture pieces because of their versatility. They can be used as footstools, or extra seats, and look great when styled in front of a fireplace, under a console, or paired at the foot of the bed. They have been a staple in our home for years.

BEFORE AND AFTER

As you know, we recently moved to Charleston, South Carolina, and one of the challenges of being in a new city is finding local sources for high-quality work. When it came to reupholstering our ottomans, I knew Calico would do an amazing job. The closest location to us is in Charlotte (about a three-hour drive from us!), but knowing I was in good hands was worth it. The team was so friendly and helpful from the moment we walked in. The store manager, Landry, and I had chatted a little beforehand about what I envisioned for the style of the ottomans, but when I walked in, I was like a kid in a candy store with all the options to choose from in person.

Choosing the right fabric was an adventure in itself. While initially, I selected a stunning floral print, practicality won out, especially with four kids and a pup in the mix, and I opted for a beautiful performance fabric. I love this striped fabric called Coronado Stripe Bay Blue, which is an outdoor fabric but doesn’t look or feel like traditional outdoor fabrics. You would never know! I knew this fabric was perfect as it has the coastal charm I hoped for, without sacrificing durability.

To add some personal style to it, I added a gorgeous trim that really makes these one-of-a-kind pieces. I love how the stripes are a classic pattern, paired with florals on the trim for a bit of femininity. If you look closely, you’ll see the trim is lined with a beautiful blue-gray performance Cyrpton fabric called Nomad so there are actually three different fabrics that went into this project!

Calico has an incredible selection of fabric options to choose from, varying in patterns, textures, and colors, but with the guidance of Landry and her team, it is all fun and not overwhelming. Reupholstering anything is an investment, and Calico makes the entire process SO easy. They reupholster thousands of furniture pieces a year, and with their expertise and guidance, you are in good hands!

I can’t say enough great things about the team at Calico, and the craftsmanship is wonderful ~ I recommend them to everyone for their projects! I can’t wait for the next project!
