ORC Week 3: Design Details

This is Week 3 of the One Room Challenge with Better Homes and Gardens!

(Details on the challenge are linked here in case you missed it!)

We just had electrical wiring installed in the ceiling and added a Crystorama Chandelier and this week, I am sharing more in depth on some of the design elements.

All the materials from my original design plan are starting to arrive which is very exciting. We are currently wrapping up a family trip as I type so I’ll try to make this post a quick one!

While we are out of town, my woodworker is installing the new mantel for our fireplace!! It has been a goal of mine since we moved in 4 years ago to redesign it and I can’t wait to share the progress on that next week.

We are using 3 different kinds of wallpaper, in 3 different ways which may surprise you! I am most excited about the artwork panels {with lighting} that we’ll be starting on this week. I think the design is pretty clever and something I’ve never seen done. I am hoping it turns out as cool as I am envisioning.

Here are some of the design plan details ~

Note that a few other things are not shown here so be sure to check back later or sign up for email updates if you aren’t already 🙂

1.

This is the decorative trim that will be going around our tv (to make it look like a framed TV) . It is also the trim we are using for the wallpaper panels and will be carried into the mantel design as well. It has a beaded pattern to it if you look closely.

2.

I have loved this wallpaper and finally found a place to use it! These will be framed like artwork to flank the fireplace. We are adding sconces to the panels and the entire piece will be removable. The sconces have even been rewired to secretly plug in the wall behind the panels. It will be easier to explain when they are completed; I promise!

3.

I have extra wallpaper from my husband’s office update that we will be using on the bottom shelf of a custom made coffee table ( you can see inspiration for the coffee table design here and my husbands office update on this post).

4.

This is part of the mantel design. There will be 6 of these squares total (we are also incorporating the trim from #1). The paint color is BM Chantilly Lace, which we use throughout our home. It’s a tried and trusted white in case you are looking. Not too cool, or too warm. It is my go-to white paint color for almost any room, furniture or built in.

5.

This wallpaper is the Milton and King Tribe wallpaper. It has a beautifully simple pattern of light blue and white shades. The blue is very similar to the wall color in the room so everything will flow nicely. It is hard to photograph the true pattern but I’ll share close ups when it is installed. This wallpaper will be used on the wall with the TV.

6.

I never thought I would be so excited about fabric trim! I found this one on Etsy and it is beautiful in person. The quality is great; very thick. I will share more on this DIY but I added it to our IKEA curtains for an accent (inspiration was on the original board).

7.

After going back and forth on a couple shades for the beams, this is the one we landed on. They are currently being made and will be installed in the next 2 weeks. I can’t wait for these to go in! With the chandelier and the beams, the entire “5th wall” will now be added point of interest vs a big blank, boring ceiling.

8.

I’ve been eyeing Caitlin Wilson’s floral pillows for sooo long. I found an Etsy vendor that makes them with her Vienna fabric (for less!). The material was thinner than I expected but the pattern is just what I was looking for. Here is a link to purchase these: Floral Pillow Covers.

9.

Last, but not least! The foundation of the room. The rug arrived! I love the natural fiber look, but didn’t want to spend a fortune on something uncomfortable. This one is SO soft and cozy.

Next week will hopefully be an update on the mantel and panels! Thank YOU for following along!
