These beautiful pieces of art have been used in residential and commercial designs for years now. I honestly had no idea that they had a name until recently and I was even more surprised to learn that they are actually African tribal headdresses! Incorporating a Juju hat into a design was actually a hot trend a couple years ago but I am seeing them everywhere again today. Is this just a trend that’s back, or a timeless piece? Either way I love how they add so much texture to a space and immediately had to find out more.
I’ve discovered a few interesting things that make these pieces unlike anything you have in your house. I’m also sharing tips on where to hang a Juju hat, how to choose the right one for your space and where you can find one to purchase.
- Juju Hats originate in the African country called Cameroon and traditionally worn by the royalty and other high ranking members of society at festivals and ceremonies.
- Juju hats are a symbol of prosperity. Created from feathers, Juju hats also symbolize the purity of life and beauty of birds.
How and where to do you hang a Juju hat?
Above a fireplace, over a headboard, in the dining room, the list is endless. These can be placed individually, or in a cluster. Juju Hats easily add texture and interest to a room and are typically used as a focal point in a room.
How to choose the right one for your space
There are SO many options available it can be hard to choose which one! An off white is usually a safe bet but if you want to go with a bold, colorful one be sure it goes with the overall color scheme of the room. This is true for anything that you add to a room but especially when it comes to a focal piece! The bright and colorful pieces create a dramatic statement while the neutral tones add a subtle, layered look.
Where to purchase?
An authentic hat takes multiple artisans weeks to create with the intricate placement of each feather folded into place. The real thing may cost a pretty penny but there are beautiful artificial ones available to purchase as well. I’ve found some reasonably priced ones that come in all different sizes and colors. And, I’ve shared a link below for DIY tutorial if you are up for a challenge!
Here are a few places I’ve found where you can purchase a Juju hat online. The prices vary depending on the size, quality and authenticity:
